Counseling Support for Widows and Widowers
It’s a life-shattering event when the love of your life dies. Initially, there is the flurry of funeral arrangements, obituaries, visitations, funeral, condolences, and flowers. Friends and family initially circle the wagons around you but shortly they go on with their lives leaving you alone to sort out your life – past, present and future.
You miss your sweetheart so. The emptiness of the place you shared is enormous. You can’t eat, you can’t sleep, and you think about him or her constantly. You hurt both physically and emotionally. You come to understand what it means to have a broken heart. You try to comfort yourself but nothing seems to help. You try to talk to others about your loneliness but unless they’ve been there, their attempts to console you fall short. Your life, which used to be big enough for two, now shrinks around you. Sad and lonely you. |
You are grieving the loss of your loved one. Grieving is natural and normal but painful. Acting as your coach, mentor and confidant through the days ahead, I will guide you through the stages of recovery. This will protect you from rushing ahead and risking negative consequences or staying mired in your grief.
Grief counseling is a legitimate medical concern, and your counselor’s fee may be covered all or in part by your medical insurance. To find out, contact your insurer’s customer service department by phone or visit their website. The phone number is typically printed on the back of your medical insurance card. Alternatively, you may call me, Amy Owens, directly at 317.727.6331. |
Recovery from the loss of a love proceeds in waves or stages. Your life is initially about taking care of the basics and getting through your days and nights. Then, you’ll begin to establish a “new normal” for yourself with people, places, things, activities that are comfortable and/or comforting to you. Next, you’ll begin to think of yourself as a single – a big step. Over time, you’ll get more and more clarity about who you are and how you want your life to be. After that, you begin to create your new life. You’ll begin to date. You will fall in love again.
If you choose, I will be there with you from start to finish. When the time comes, I will help you get yourself ready for dating by sharing viable first date protocols with you. If you like, I can arrange “practice dates” for you with some of my trusted clients. After just a few dates, you’ll get past your fears and get your feet on the ground. From that point forward, you’ll simply fall back on the social skills you’ve developed over your lifetime.
