Life is really all about relationships - with our families, friends, spouses, lovers, co-workers, neighbors. Each relationship adds something to our lives and each one requires maintenance of some kind.
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, relationships get tangled, difficult to navigate, or break down altogether.

Rather than pushing a difficult relationship to the side, this is the time to bring in a consultant to offer another viewpoint and to put other options on the table.
Contrary to popular opinion, counselors don’t fix people. Counselors provide perspective, feedback and offer options for moving forward. With this information, people fix their own problems and reap the positive rewards of their efforts.

How long does counseling take?
My clients are typically educated and insightful people who are motivated for positive change.
They are often struggling with marital or dating relationships; divorce and recovery from it; grief and loss; anxiety; depression; employment difficulties; or alcohol and/or drug problems.
They come to see me individually, as a couple, or even as a family.

Couples therapy is typically brief therapy. Provided that the partners are insightful, motivated for positive change, and neither partner has already opted out of the relationship, couples therapy moves quickly and can readily be completed in 6 to 8 sessions. Challenges are identified in the first one or two meetings. Changes are made quickly, and improvement is almost immediately apparent. The last two or three sessions, which are spaced out over time, are conducted simply to confirm that the earlier work and changes are still holding.
When couples therapy does not result in rapid, lasting improvement, the most common reasons are: 1) One or both parties have already opted out of the relationship; or 2) One or both parties have personal issues that must first be addressed in individual therapy.

Family therapy tends to be short-term also, following the same general course and timeline as couples therapy with an emphasis on untangling communication and clarifying values.
Individual therapy has a high degree of variability because people are so different and their circumstances are so different. Some people seek counseling simply to get another opinion or to make a decision about something. They meet their goal in one, two, or three meetings. Other people will want to dig deeper and so they stay longer in therapy.
Still other clients are going through a major life change like divorce, the death of a spouse or a close family member, a medical diagnosis, significant anxiety or depression. They need more support, mentoring, and time. As a therapist, I am committed to giving my clients the best care possible for as long as they need it. However, I am also committed to not keeping my clients in therapy for one minute longer than they need it. |
“I enjoyed my visit with you more than any I have made for counseling. I thought you really understood me and will schedule to see you again.” |
“I learned that when the woman in my life is upset and complaining, I need to ‘duck, dodge, and deliver’ instead of feeling immobilized and criticized. My personal life is a whole lot more enjoyable now that I have this information.” |
